What To Plant in Austin?

What to Plant in Austin
New to Austin?  Wondering what to plant?  What thrives?

It’s not as easy as one might think.  Even longtime Austinites struggle with this question.  Our nursery provides many plants Austin residents rely on that flourish in our local conditions.  We get newcomers in the nursery all the time that have recently relocated to Austin, Lakeway, Dripping Springs, the Hill Country or the surrounding areas. They all ask the same question, “What can I plant here?”

Austin is a very unique place when it comes to plants and landscapes.

In some areas you have the deer to consider. In the hill country, Lakeway, Wimberely and the surrounding areas the ground is basically solid rock.  What to do?  You can get a rock bar or a jackhammer and get a good work out breaking up the ground. Or, you can choose to plant in above ground beds or containers.   Bringing in new soil and/or amending current landscape beds in general is a good place to start.

It is important to keep in mind that plants that do well in Houston, for example, do not perform the same here in Austin. Houston has different soil and a very different climate that provides a steady source of  rainfall making it a relatively easy planting environment.  Planting in Austin is much different, it can be pretty overwhelming at times.  The  City of Austin Grow Green Guide is a great resource.  This guide offers a large variety of plants that succeed in the Austin area.
